Take the time to learn about the potential benefits, the health risks and the many unknowns regarding generic flagyl. It can be frightening to read a list of the side effects of Metronidazole. More than a few of my patients have immediately assumed that they would suffer from all of them. The truth is that most people will experience none of them, just the benefits of Metronidazole. Side effects vary from person to person and it is impossible to predict exactly how each individual will be affected. Some characteristics and pre-existing conditions are known to increase the risk from certain side effects. Doctors should assess these factors before advising patients on which drugs to choose. The FDA monitors reports of adverse drug reactions and has found no difference in the rates between generic and brand name drugs.

Flagyl (generic name Metronidazole) contain the active ingredient metronidazole, which is a type of medicine called an antibiotic. Metronidazole kills a wide variety of bacteria that are known collectively as anaerobic bacteria. This means that they do not need oxygen to grow and multiply. Anaerobic bacteria can cause infections in areas of the body such as the bones, gut, pelvic cavity and gums.

Metronidazole dosage

The usual adult oral dosage for Anaerobic Bacterial Infections is 7.5 mg per 2.2 pounds of body weight every 6 hours. The usual dosage for Acute Amebic Dysentery is 750 mg taken by mouth 3 times daily for 5 to 10 days. Trichomoniasis requires one-day treatment-two grams of Metronidazole, given either as a single dose or in two divided doses of one gram each given in the same day. The dosage should be individualized. Single-dose treatment can assure compliance, especially if administered under supervision, in those patients who cannot be relied on to continue the seven-day regimen.

Metronidazole side effects

Flagyl may cause urine to darken in color. Metronidazole is not harmful. In the unlikely event you have an allergic reaction to Metronidazole, seek immediate medical attention. Use of Metronidazole for prolonged or repeated periods may result in oral thrush or a new vaginal yeast infection (oral or vaginal fungal infection). Contact your doctor if you notice white patches in your mouth, a change in vaginal discharge, or other new symptoms. Two serious side effects that have occurred with Metronidazole are seizures and numbness or tingling in the arms, legs, hands, and feet.
