Take the time to learn about the potential benefits, the health risks and the many unknowns regarding generic zyprexa. It can be frightening to read a list of the side effects of Olanzapine. More than a few of my patients have immediately assumed that they would suffer from all of them. The truth is that most people will experience none of them, just the benefits of Olanzapine. Side effects vary from person to person and it is impossible to predict exactly how each individual will be affected. Some characteristics and pre-existing conditions are known to increase the risk from certain side effects. Doctors should assess these factors before advising patients on which drugs to choose. The FDA monitors reports of adverse drug reactions and has found no difference in the rates between generic and brand name drugs.

Zyprexa, generic name Olanzapine, is used to treat nervous, emotional, and mental conditions (e.g., schizophrenia). It may also be used alone or with other medicines (e.g., lithium or valproate) to treat bipolar disorder (manic-depressive illness) or mania that is part of bipolar disorder. People with this disease may also feel depressed, anxious or tense. Zyprexa belongs to a group of medicines called antipsychotics. It is also a mood stabiliser that prevents further occurrences of the disabling high and low extremes of mood associated with this condition.

Introduction

Olanzapine works by blocking or lessening the effects of several chemicals in the brain. Zyprexa comes in tablet form and is usually taken once a day. The drug is also available in tablets that are meant to dissolve rapidly in the mouth. Injectable forms are also available. Olanzapine is not recommended for use in children under the age of 18 years as there is not enough information on its effects in this age group.

Olanzapine warnings

Olanzapine tendencies to cause weight gain, high blood pressure, and other metabolic problems. It was found that weight gain could continue for as long as two years after the medication was stopped. These issues, weight gain and changes in metabolism, profoundly threaten long-term health. The relationship with respect to the drug is clear, but what hasn’t been well defined is the actual mechanism by which Zyprexa causes these events to occur. Patients should be aware that it could be dangerous to stop taking the medication abruptly, and should talk with their physicians to decide whether the benefits outweigh the risks of taking Zyprexa.

Zyprexa side effects

Check with your doctor if any of these most common side effects persist or become bothersome: back or joint pain, constipation, cough, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, increased appetite, indigestion, lightheadedness, numbness or tingling of the skin, restlessness, sore throat, weakness, weight gain. Seek medical attention right away if any of these severe side effects occur: severe allergic reactions, abnormal thoughts, chest pain, confusion, decreased urination, fainting, fast, slow, or irregular heartbeat, fever, increased saliva production or drooling, increased sweating, memory loss, muscle pain, weakness, or stiffness, new or worsening mental or mood changes, remor, trouble concentrating, speaking, or swallowing, trouble sitting still, trouble walking or standing, uncontrolled muscle movements.
