Side effects vary from person to person and it is impossible to predict exactly how each individual will be affected. Some characteristics and pre-existing conditions are known to increase the risk from certain side effects. Doctors should assess these factors before advising patients on which drugs to choose. The FDA monitors reports of adverse drug reactions and has found no difference in the rates between generic and brand name drugs.
Generic Aldactone or Spironolactone tablets belong to a group of medicines called potassium-sparing diuretics (water tablets), which help you lose excess fluid from your body. Spironolactone is used to treat oedema (fluid retention) caused by liver disease, kidney problems or heart failure.

Before taking spironolactone
Some medicines are not suitable for people with certain conditions, and sometimes a medicine may only be used if extra care is taken. For these reasons, before you start taking spironolactone it is important that your doctor or pharmacist knows: if you are pregnant, trying for a baby or breast-feeding. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have kidney problems, if you have a problem with your adrenal glands, called Addison's disease. Also tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have porphyria, a rare inherited blood disorder.
Can spironolactone cause problems?
Along with their useful effects, most medicines can cause unwanted side-effects although not everyone experiences them. These usually improve as your body adjusts to the new medicine, but speak with your doctor or pharmacist if any of the following side-effects continue or become troublesome.
Side-effects specific to Spironolactone
The frequency of these side-effects is unknown: abnormal laboratory test results, activation of diabetes, allergic reactions including fever, kidney problems, vasculitis, skin and mucous membrane problems such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, erythema multiforme, dermatitis, rashes, itching, urticaria, unexplained or easy bruising of the skin, lesions, blistering or photosensitivity skin reactions. Seek medical advice if you get a fever, a rash or any skin problem, breast enlargement in men and women, breast pain or sensitive nipples, confusion, deafness.
