Take the time to learn about the potential benefits, the health risks and the many unknowns regarding generic lamisil. It can be frightening to read a list of the side effects of Terbinafine. More than a few of my patients have immediately assumed that they would suffer from all of them. The truth is that most people will experience none of them, just the benefits of Terbinafine. Side effects vary from person to person and it is impossible to predict exactly how each individual will be affected. Some characteristics and pre-existing conditions are known to increase the risk from certain side effects. Doctors should assess these factors before advising patients on which drugs to choose. The FDA monitors reports of adverse drug reactions and has found no difference in the rates between generic and brand name drugs.

Lamisil (generic name Terbinafine) is a prescription antifungal medicine used for the treatment of onychomycosis and fungal infections of the fingernail or toenail caused by the fungus, tinea unguium. The fungal infection may be cured within several weeks after using Lamisil. Studies have shown a better treatment success rate with terbinafine than with other available prescription drugs such as griseofulvin and itraconazole.

How Taken

The usual dose is 250 mg once daily for 6 weeks for the treatment of fingernails, and 12 weeks for the treatment of toenails. Alternatively, terbinafine may be given as two tablets (500 mg) once daily for 7 days during the first week of each month for 3 months for toenail infections. For children under 20 kg, a dose of 62.5 mg/day, and for children between 20 and 40 kg a dose of 125 mg/day have been recommended. Lamisil may be taken with or without food.

Drug Interactions

Patients taking Lamisil tablets should watch for signs of liver toxicity, such as fatigue, nausea, vomiting, yellowing of the eyes and skin, dark urine, or light colored stools. Another concern with Lamisil tablets is the possibility of drug interactions, and there is a long list of drugs that should not be used together with Lamisil tablets, or that should be used only with caution. The Lamisil dose may need to be adjusted to prevent adverse drug interactions and side effects. Anyone taking any other prescription medication should check with their doctor and their pharmacist before taking Lamisil. Again, Lamisil cream does not carry the same concerns; however, it is always wise to ask an appropriate medical professional before mixing medication.

Possible side effects

Lamisil can cause an allergy, tumor, swollen glands, spotty skin, fever, flu symptoms, eyes problems, weight loss, eruption, headache, belly pain, diarrhea, unusual taste in your mouth. Other Lamisil side effects include gastrointestinal events, musculoskeletal problems, renal and urinary symptoms, and hepatic events. Rare cases of liver failure have occurred with the use of Lamisil. Hepatoxicity may occur in patients with and without pre-existing liver disease.
