Lamisil (generic name Terbinafine) is a prescription antifungal medicine used for the treatment of onychomycosis and fungal infections of the fingernail or toenail caused by the fungus, tinea unguium. The fungal infection may be cured within several weeks after using Lamisil. The usual dose is 250 mg once daily for 6 weeks for the treatment of fingernails, and 12 weeks for the treatment of toenails. Alternatively, terbinafine may be given as two tablets (500 mg) once daily for 7 days during the first week of each month for 3 months for toenail infections. Patients taking Lamisil tablets should watch for signs of liver toxicity, such as fatigue, nausea, vomiting, yellowing of the eyes and skin, dark urine, or light colored stools. Another concern with Lamisil tablets is the possibility of drug interactions, and there is a long list of drugs that should not be used together with Lamisil tablets, or that should be used only with caution. The Lamisil dose may need to be adjusted to prevent adverse drug interactions and side effects. Anyone taking any other prescription medication should check with their doctor and their pharmacist before taking Lamisil. Again, Lamisil cream does not carry the same concerns; however, it is always wise to ask an appropriate medical professional before mixing medication.
Lamisil can cause an allergy, tumor, swollen glands, spotty skin, fever, flu symptoms, eyes problems, weight loss, eruption, headache, belly pain, diarrhea, unusual taste in your mouth. Other Lamisil side effects include gastrointestinal events, musculoskeletal problems, renal and urinary symptoms, and hepatic events. Rare cases of liver failure have occurred with the use of Lamisil. Hepatoxicity may occur in patients with and without pre-existing liver disease.
