Celebrex (generic name Celecoxib) is a NSAID used in the treatment of osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, acute pain, painful menstruation and menstrual symptoms, and to reduce numbers of colon and rectum polyps in patients with familial adenomatous polyposis. Celecoxib is also used to decrease growths found in the colon polyps in persons with a family history of this condition. This drug works by blocking the enzyme in your body that makes prostaglandins. Decreasing prostaglandins helps to reduce pain and swelling.

You should find that your pain is eased within a few days of starting to take the capsules. If after two weeks you find your pain is no better despite taking celecoxib, you should discuss this with your doctor, as an alternative painkiller may be more suitable for you. You should not take celecoxib with any other anti-inflammatory painkiller, some of which are available in cold and flu remedies which can be bought over the counter.
