Take the time to learn about the potential benefits, the health risks and the many unknowns regarding generic nexium. It can be frightening to read a list of the side effects of Esomeprazole. More than a few of my patients have immediately assumed that they would suffer from all of them. The truth is that most people will experience none of them, just the benefits of Esomeprazole. Side effects vary from person to person and it is impossible to predict exactly how each individual will be affected. Some characteristics and pre-existing conditions are known to increase the risk from certain side effects. Doctors should assess these factors before advising patients on which drugs to choose. The FDA monitors reports of adverse drug reactions and has found no difference in the rates between generic and brand name drugs.

Nexium (generic name Esomeprazole) is in a class of drugs called proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) which block the production of acid by the stomach. Chemically, Nexium is very similar to omeprazole. Proton pump inhibitors are used for the treatment of conditions such as stomach and duodenal ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and the Zollinger-Ellison syndrome which all are caused by stomach acid.

How to take Nexium

It is recommended to take each Nexium dosage with a full glass of water. Nexium should be taken at least one hour before a meal. Do not break or chew the Nexium capsules since they are formulated to release slowly in the body. There are no restrictions on food, beverages, or activities while taking Nexium. Recommended adult Nexium dosage for treatment of esophagitis is Nexium 20 mg or Nexium 40 mg one capsule daily 4 to 8 weeks (unless otherwise directed by your doctor).

What to expect

If you are taking Nexium for gastric ulcers or gastroesophagea reflux disease, your symptoms should improve within 4 to 8 weeks. An additional 4 weeks of treatment may be considered. If your symptoms do not improve or if they become worse, contact your doctor. If healing is not complete, Nexium can be given for another 4 to 8 weeks. For maintenance of healing, the recommended dosage is Nexium 20 mg once daily. For patients with severe hepatic impairment, the dose of Nexium should not exceed 20 mg. Follow the directions for using Nexium provided by your doctor.

Nexium side effects

Like any medication, Nexium may cause side effects in some people. side effects that do occur are usually mild and go away a short time after starting nexium: headache, diarrhea, constipation, nausea, dry mouth, stomach pain, cough may occur. By preventing high acidity in the stomach, it is theoretically possible that chronic use of this drug may lead to the Nexium side effect of a higher rate of gastrointestinal infections since not enough acid is available to kill germs in the stomach. An allergic reaction to Nexium is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. symptoms of an allergic reaction include: rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, trouble breathing.
