Take the time to learn about the potential benefits, the health risks and the many unknowns regarding generic lasix. It can be frightening to read a list of the side effects of Furosemide. More than a few of my patients have immediately assumed that they would suffer from all of them. The truth is that most people will experience none of them, just the benefits of Furosemide. Side effects vary from person to person and it is impossible to predict exactly how each individual will be affected. Some characteristics and pre-existing conditions are known to increase the risk from certain side effects. Doctors should assess these factors before advising patients on which drugs to choose. The FDA monitors reports of adverse drug reactions and has found no difference in the rates between generic and brand name drugs.

The kidney is one of the most complicated organs of the body. It is responsible for maintaining one’s electrolyte balance, blood pressure. Because Lasix (generic name Furosemide) leads to water loss via increased urine production it is classified as a diuretic medication. Lasix can be also used to reduce excessive blood calcium levels which are inherently dangerous to the kidneys.

Recommended dosage

The usual initial dose of furosemide for Edema is 20 mg to 40 mg given as a single dose. If needed, another dose may be administered in the same manner 2 hours later or the dose may be increased. The dose may be raised by 20 mg and given not sooner than 2 hours after the previous dose until the desired diuretic effect has been obtained. This individually determined single dose should then be given once or twice daily. The usual dose of furosemide for Acute Pulmonary Edema is 40 mg. If a satisfactory response does not occur within 1 hour, the dose may be increased to 80 mg.

Drug Interactions

Furosemide may increase the ototoxic potential of aminoglycoside antibiotics, especially in the presence of impaired renal function. Except in life-threatening situations, avoid this combination. Furosemide should not be used concomitantly with ethacrynic acid because of the possibility of ototoxicity. Simultaneous administration of sucralfate and furosemide tablets may reduce the natriuretic and antihypertensive effects of furosemide. Patients receiving both drugs should be observed closely to determine if the desired diuretic and/or antihypertensive effect of furosemide is achieved. The intake of furosemide and sucralfate should be separated by at least two hours.
