Flomax (generic name Tamsulosin) is in a group of drugs called alpha-adrenergic (AL-fa ad-ren-ER-jik) blockers. Tamsulosin relaxes your veins and arteries so that blood can more easily pass through them. It also relaxes the muscles in the prostate and bladder neck, making it easier to urinate. Flomax is used to improve urination in men with benign prostatic hyperplasia (enlarged prostate).

Flomax can cause side effects that may impair your thinking or reactions. Be careful if you drive or do anything that requires you to be awake and alert. You may feel dizzy when getting up from a sitting or lying position. Avoid standing up too quickly to keep from falling. Avoid drinking alcohol. It may increase dizziness caused by tamsulosin. Tamsulosin can affect the pupils of your eyes during cataract surgery. If you have cataract surgery during your treatment with tamsulosin, tell the surgeon ahead of time that you are using this medication. Do not stop using tamsulosin before surgery unless your surgeon tells you to.
The initial dosage of Flomax for treating enlarged prostate is 0.4 mg taken once each day. If symptoms have not improved after a period of two to four weeks, the Flomax dosage may be increased to 0.8 mg daily. It is important to maintain a routine dosing schedule with this medication, as failing to take this medication for several days will require the dosage to be restarted at 0.4 mg. For those patients who fail to respond to the Flomax 0.4 mg dose after two to four weeks of dosing, the dose of Flomax capsules can be increased to 0.8 mg once daily.
You should not take cimetidine, conivaptan, cyclosporine, imatinib, isoniazid, methimazole, pioglitazone, ropinirole, ticlopidine, warfarin, antibiotics, antidepressants, antifungal medication, heart medication, blood pressure medication, heart rhythm medication, HIV or AIDS medication, or medications used to treat psychiatric disorders while using tamsulosin. These medications can interfere with your body's ability to absorb your medication the way that you should, which can cause a potentially dangerous reaction. Tamsulosin will affect your ability to think or react at your normal pace. You should not do any activities that require your full attention such as driving until you know how this medication will affect you. Because this medication causes dizziness you will need to take care when getting up from a resting position.
