Take the time to learn about the potential benefits, the health risks and the many unknowns regarding generic keflex. It can be frightening to read a list of the side effects of Cephalexin. More than a few of my patients have immediately assumed that they would suffer from all of them. The truth is that most people will experience none of them, just the benefits of Cephalexin. Side effects vary from person to person and it is impossible to predict exactly how each individual will be affected. Some characteristics and pre-existing conditions are known to increase the risk from certain side effects. Doctors should assess these factors before advising patients on which drugs to choose. The FDA monitors reports of adverse drug reactions and has found no difference in the rates between generic and brand name drugs.

Keflex (generic name Cephalexin) is in a group of drugs called cephalosporin antibiotics. Cefalexin works by interfering with the ability of bacteria to form cell walls. This allows holes to appear in the cell walls and kills the bacteria. Cefalexin is usually given to treat skin and wound infections, infections of the upper and lower airways, ears, skin and soft tissue. It may also be used to treat urinary tract infections, certain sexually-transmitted infections, bone and joint infections and dental infections. Two common brand names are Keflex and Celaxin, and it is often prescribed for acne.

Cephalexin Dosage

The usual adult cephalexin dose for bacterial endocarditis prophylaxis is 2 g taken orally in a single dose one hour before the procedure. The dose of cephalexin normally administered to adults for cystitis is 250 mg taken by mouth every 6 hours or 500 mg orally every 12 hours for 7 to 14 days. The dose of cephalexin normally administered to adults for otitis media is 500 mg taken by mouth every 6 hours for 10 to 14 days. The usual adult cephalexin dose for pharyngitis is 250 mg orally taken every 6 hours or 500 mg orally every 12 hours. The usual adult cephalexin dose for skin or soft tissue infection is 250 mg taken by mouth every 6 hours or 500 mg taken by mouth every 12 hours.

Keflex side effects

Cephalexin could cause dizziness or drowsiness. These effects could also worsen if the drug is taken with other medicines or with alcohol. Keflex must be administered with caution. If you are taking it, driving and other possibly unsafe activities should be done with extreme caution until you find out your reaction to the drug. Cephalexin could also decrease the blood’s ability to clot properly. And so, activities which could cause injury or bruising should be avoided while under this medication. Inform your doctor if you are experiencing any unusual bleeding or bruising.
