Take the time to learn about the potential benefits, the health risks and the many unknowns regarding generic cipro. It can be frightening to read a list of the side effects of Ciprofloxacin. More than a few of my patients have immediately assumed that they would suffer from all of them. The truth is that most people will experience none of them, just the benefits of Ciprofloxacin. Side effects vary from person to person and it is impossible to predict exactly how each individual will be affected. Some characteristics and pre-existing conditions are known to increase the risk from certain side effects. Doctors should assess these factors before advising patients on which drugs to choose. The FDA monitors reports of adverse drug reactions and has found no difference in the rates between generic and brand name drugs.

Cipro is a an antibiotic in a group of drugs called fluoroquinolones with a generic name of Ciprofloxacin. Cipro (generic name Ciprofloxacin) has been approved for the treatment of bacterial infections, especially urinary tract infections (UTIs) such as acute uncomplicated cystitis, pyelonephritis, and chronic bacterial prostatitis. You can still drink milk and consume dairy products when taking Cipro, just make sure you don’t use such products alone with Cipro. Otherwise your medicine may become less effective.

Why is Cipro prescribed?

Cipro is used to treat infections of the lower respiratory tract, the abdomen, the skin, the bones and joints, and the urinary tract, including cystitis (bladder inflammation) in women. It is also prescribed for severe sinus or bronchial infections, infectious diarrhea, typhoid fever, inhalational anthrax, infections of the prostate gland, and some sexually transmitted diseases such as gonorrhea. Additionally, some doctors prescribe Cipro for certain serious ear infections, tuberculosis, and some of the infections common in people with AIDS. Because Ciprofloxacin is effective only for certain types of bacterial infections, before beginning treatment your doctor may perform tests to identify the specific organisms causing your infection.

Possible drug interactions when taking Cipro

Serious and fatal reactions have occurred when Cipro was taken in combination with theophylline. These reactions have included cardiac arrest, seizures, status epilepticus (continuous attacks of epilepsy with no periods of consciousness), and respiratory failure. The following can interfere with the absorption of Cipro and should be taken no less than 6 hours before or 2 hours after a dose: Antacids containing magnesium and aluminum Carafate Supplements and other products containing calcium, iron, or zinc Videx chewable tablets and pediatric powder You should also avoid taking Cipro with milk or yogurt alone, though calcium taken as part of a full meal has no significant effect on the drug.

What side effects may occur?

Cipro is usually well tolerated and only a few mild side effects are possible. While mild side effects you may get are likely to go away and do not need to be reported to your health care provider, more serious side effects are also possible, and your doctor is supposed to know about them as soon as they are detected. Cipro is supposed to be taken for as long as prescribed even if you feel better, as otherwise a relapse of infection is possible. Never share Cipro with other people and make sure to store it in some place where it will not be accessed by others.
